What was King Philip’s War?
In the 17th century, about 8,000 Amerindians lived in the area. When
the first European settlers moved into the area, such as the Pilgrims
in 1620, there was no animosity between them and the Amerindians. In
fact, without help from Massasoit and other Amerindians, the Pilgrims
would have likely starved that first winter. That was soon to change
thanks to the Europeans endless search for land and wealth. Thinking
that the various tribes should be under their colonial rule the English
made things very tense and in 1675 Metacomet, son of Massasoit joined
the fight. Metacomet was also known as King Philip and the conflict
was called King Philip's War.
What happened between the American Indians
and the early settlers to make this war happen?
