Moose in Northern New Hampshire moose

"Moose Alley" is the area surrounding Route 3 in northern New Hampshire, from the center of the town of Pittsburg, New Hampshire to the Canadian border. People come from far and near in hopes of catching a glimpse of moose, and they usually do!

The chances of seeing moose in Moose Alley are good because the area provides excellent habitat for them. Moose don't seem to like the temperature to be much above 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius), and many of their favorite foods are abundant.

Moose live in places called bogs. The Northern Forest habitat of a bog is a cool, wet area where drainage is poor and deep layers of peat (very old decomposed and compressed plants) have accumulated. The soil and water in a bog is very acidic, making life too tough for many plants, but just right for a select group of others. Sphagnum moss abounds, and in it grow cranberries, orchids, and a number of beautiful flowering shrubs. Several insect-eating plants like the Pitcher plant lend a dramatic note to the local wildlife. This is a fragile habitat which cannot tolerate repeated human foot traffic.
