Where was the Potapaug Quarter?
Potapaug Quarter or Eight Mile Meadow, Essex
was originally a part of Saybrook Colony. King James the 1st passed
his claim to a group of noblemen and gentry who had ambitious plans
for the settlement. This patent included the land on both sides of the
Connecticut River from Long Island Sound to the current towns of Lyme
on the east bank and Chester on the West. Only one of the patentees,
George Fenwick, settled in Fenwick and the planned colony never developed
beyond a fortification at Saybrook Point built in 1635 with a few scattered
houses.
The Potapaug Quarters included the current towns of Essex and Deep
River.
