2017 WGBY Masterpiece Ball Mystery Masquerade

It’s a MYSTERY! Masquerade.

The 2017 Masterpiece Ball benefiting public television in western New England is made festive thanks in no small part to the players and performers taking stage in the Mystery! Club and in the dining room/ballroom.

Here’s the lowdown on the night:

THE WGBY MASTERPIECE BALLROOM ORCHESTRA & CLASSIC JAZZ ENSEMBLE

JEFFREY W. HOLMES

Composer, arranger, performer, and educator JeffreyW. Holmes is Professor of Music and Director of Jazz & African-American Music Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is a nationally published and commissioned composer/arranger and multiple recipient of National Endowment For The Arts Jazz Composition Grants.

Holmes has written music for John Abercrombie, The Big Apple Circus, Ernie Watts, Max Roach, Yusef Lateef, Doc Severinsen, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Sammy Davis Jr., Louis Bellson, Vanguard Orchestra (Thad Jones/Mel Lewis), Sheila Jordan, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis, Mel Torme, David Goloschokin, John Abercrombie, Slide Hampton and numerous NYC Broadway shows.

DAWNING HOLMES

Vocalist Dawning Holmes has performed in London, and other European venues, led her own ensembles in New York City, and made guest appearances with Paul Winter and locally with the UMASS Studio Orchestra, while being regularly featured with the Jeff Holmes Big Band, covering a range of singing genres.

Holmes will be joining the 10-piece WGBY Masterpiece Jazz Orchestra lead by Jeffrey Holmes as they deliver authentic songs of the 1920s.

COSTUME CONTEST JUDGE

Vanessa James is an international designer of sets, costumes and lighting for theatre, and an Emmy award nominated art director for film and TV. Her celebrated designs in plastic and paper are in the archives of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. She is a professor of Theatre at Mount Holyoke College and the author of two books, The Genealogy of Greek Mythology and Shakespeare’s Genealogies.
